Biography

Nick Whalen is the Member of Parliament for the riding of St. John’s East, and a Member of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates, as well as its Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure.

A successful lawyer and professional engineer, born and raised in St. John’s East, Nick uses his extensive experience to defend the interests of the people he represents with steadfast determination every single day.

Nick has been involved with numerous local community organizations, including serving as the director of the Parkinson Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, and as Chair of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy Canada – a charity supporting wildlife and sustainable development in Kenya. He also serves as pro bono counsel to the Gospel Folk Seniors Choir, and coaches minor soccer with Feildians Athletic Association. Prior to being elected, Nick was a partner and patent agent at the law firm McInnes Cooper, where he practiced corporate commercial law, energy law, and intellectual property law. He was recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada – a publication ranking individual lawyers and firms across multiple areas of expertise – for his practices in Information Technology and Intellectual Property Law.

Nick has an LLB from McGill University, and earned both his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Engineering from Queen’s University. He lives in St. John’s with his wife and their two children.
